Rajab: The Month of Allah SWT

Entering the glorious month of Rajab

By the bounty of Allah we are now welcoming the exalted month of Rajab.  Upon the arrival of this month the  The Beloved Prophet (ﷺ) peace and blessings be upon him would supplicate saying "Oh Allah, bless us in Rajab and Sha’ban; and convey us to Ramadan" (Shaykh Hisham Kabani). May Allah grant us tawfeeq to attain His blessings in this month so we may arrive at Ramadhan in the best of states. Ameen.

The Prophet (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) said: “Rajab is the month of Allah, Sha`bān is my month, and Ramadan is the month of my Umma.”(Narrated by al-Suyuti). Rajab is the month in which we turn back to Allah (Almighty and Majestic) with remorseful hearts whilst giving the opportunity for our good deeds to serve as our repentance.  Particularly, we are taught to seek the forgiveness and favours  of  Allah (Almighty and Majestic) on the first night of Rajab, as the Beloved Prophet (ﷺ) peace and blessings be upon him said:  “There are five nights on which du`āa’ is not rejected - the first night of Rajab, the fifteenth night of Sha`bān, Thursday night, the night before `Eid al-Fitr and the night before `Eid al-Nahr (al-Adha).” (Narrated  by Imam Suyuti). Sayyiduna Ali would also increase his amount of worship on this blessed night.

The month of Rajab is the key to the months of goodness that follow it (Sha'ban and Ramadhan). Imam Abu Bakr al-Warraq has stated: “in the month of Rajab you sow the seeds, in Sha`ban you irrigate them and in Ramadan you reap the harvest.” Therefore the month of Rajab gives us the opportunity to prepare our hearts and souls for the coming months, by seeking the mercy of Allah (Almighty and Majestic) and His pardon for any wrongdoing, with the assurance that our prayer is answered.

Isra wal miraj (The Miraculous Night Journey) - The Horizontal and Vertical

One of the most extraordinary events that took place in the month of Rajab (most scholars have agreed that it was the 27th Rajab) was the night the Beloved Prophet (ﷺ) peace and blessings be upon him, made a 2 part journey to Masjid Al--Aqsa (Al Aqsa Mosque, Jerusalem) and  then transcended to the heavens in one night.

The Qur'aan speaks about the Journey taking place from Makkahto Jerusalem and Hadeeth provides the details of this Journey.  It is stated Jibr'aeel (Gabriel) woke the Beloved Prophet  (ﷺ) peace and blessing be upon him, from his sleep and they traveled on a heavenly animal (Buraq) to Masjid al Aqsa (Horizontal Journey). On this Journey they made many stops where Allah (Almighty and Majestic) wanted to show the Beloved Prophet  (ﷺ) peace and blessing be upon him, His signs.  The Beloved Prophet  (ﷺ) peace and blessings be upon him witnessed many things on his horizontal journey where he would dismount the Buraq and Jibraeel would explain each thing that was seen.

One of the scenes the Beloved Prophet  (ﷺ) peace and blessings be upon him, saw (which is an imperative lesson for this day and age) was a Buffalo coming out of a hole for the hole to then close and the Buffalo trying to re-enter which was impossible.  Jibraeel went on to explain how this is a lesson demonstrating when words exit the mouth they must be processed carefully as once they leave the lips they cannot be taken back.

After an insightful journey to Masjid-al-Aqsa, the Beloved Prophet  (ﷺ) tied up the Buraq and lead the prayer with all the previous Prophets praying behind him. He  (ﷺ) peace and blessing be upon him, was then shown the heavenly ladder which had been sent down for the Beloved Prophet (ﷺ) peace and blessing be upon him, to begin his vertical journey to the heavens.  The Beloved Prophet  (ﷺ) peace and blessing be upon him, was greeted by many Prophets on different heavenly spheres whilst still being shown the many more signs of Allah (Almighty and Majestic).

The Beloved Prophet  (ﷺ) peace and blessings be upon him, then entered a station where no other creation could pass into. So he  (ﷺ) was told to continue alone and this is where the Beloved Prophet  (ﷺ) peace and blessings be upon him, experienced the Divine presence of Allah (Almighty and Majestic).  In this meeting the Beloved Prophet  (ﷺ) peace and blessing be upon him, was given many Directives and one of the most prominent was the Gift of Prayer ( this was the day our 5 obligatory prayers were established).

Maximising the rewards in this Sacred Month

Every good deed that is carried out in a Sacred Month is multiplied therefore we are advised to maximise the amount of good deeds and worship we do.  It is also recommended by the Beloved Prophet  (ﷺ)  peace and blessings be upon him, to fast a few days of any sacred month.  Sayyiduna Umar and his son `Abdullah and al-Sayyida `A’isha, liked to make `Umrah in Rajab.

May Allah bless us in this sacred month and grant us the ability to reap the rewards through sincere intentions and great actions. Peace and blessings upon our great Prophet Muhammad  (ﷺ) who showed us the great path of goodness and warned us of wrongdoing. Ameen
