Islamic Community Centre wins at 2015 LABC Building Excellence Awards Grand Final

The Islamic Community Centre in Kings Lynn, Norfolk, has won the award for best public service building at the Grand Final of the LABC Building Excellence Awards – one of the most recognised events in the building industry’s calendar.

A panel of industry experts judged a list of the highest quality projects from around England and Wales to reward the best in technical innovation, sustainability and design. The Islamic Community Centre was converted from a former public house and was a public and charity led development with limited funds, all raised by the local community. Swift decision making was vital to ensure that the project ran on time and to budget and the site manager consulted regularly with the Building Control Surveyor to make sure the centre complied with building regulations.

LABC Chief Executive Paul Everall said: “This project demonstrates the strength of a community that funded and built this community centre. While the lack of plant and manpower available impacted on the design of the internal structure, this did not compromise the layout of the building and the need to provide a large open area for prayer. Innovative solutions to problems were found and new skills learnt by all those involved, giving the community a facility that provides seminars and lectures as well as a place of prayer and celebration”.

“Our building excellence awards are an opportunity for the trade to celebrate good practice. Our winners demonstrate how positive working relationships with local council building control teams achieve high quality, sustainable buildings. Our awards are unique because they recognise how this cooperation improves building standards and professionalism across the industry.”

The Grand Final of the LABC Building Excellence Awards took place on Tuesday 10 November 2015 at the Lancaster in London and was hosted by comedian and impressionist, Jon Culshaw, best known for his work on Dead Ringers. Over 650 building industry professionals including contractors, architects and engineers attended the celebration to find out which projects won across the 14 hotly contested categories.
